DIY Citrus Body Oil

diy citrus body oil tutorial

Back when we were living in precedented times, I had a solid Saturday routine.

I’d usually get up around 8 or so and make myself a cup of matcha. I’d drink my matcha on the couch, or on the balcony if it was warm, and I’d read a book or catch up on issues on Bon Appetit. Sometimes in the winter when it was snowing, I’d throw on some Billie Holiday and just sit on the couch watching the snow. It was the perfect cosy, slow morning 🙂

Around 10:20 or so, I’d start getting my things together for yoga and get ready to head out. I’d walk to the studio (that I now miss so much!) and practice with one of my favourite instructors. It was a detox hot yoga class and was the perfect balance of challenging poses and deep stretches. I always left feeling so calm and centred.

On the walk home, I’d usually stop at Loblaws to pick up some groceries for lunch and would then head home for a much-needed shower.

Saturday was always my day to take a long, luxurious shower and it was pure heaven. If I had plans with friends at night, or sometimes a date, the pampering that ensued was nothing if not lengthy.

Before even getting into the shower, I’d brush my hair to ensure that it wasn’t tangly when washing it. Next, comes the dry brushing. The dry brushing acts as a kind of pre-exfoliator before getting into the shower and also claims to help combat cellulite. Dry brushing helps to stimulate the lymphatic system, increase circulation and energy and help detox your body, so it’s a great step to add to your self-care routine. I do feel like the dry brushing has helped a small amount with cellulite and I definitely notice a difference in energy levels. I did my dry brushing at night once and was too energized to sleep!

Anyway, when I was actually in the shower my hair got washed (probably with purple shampoo to tone it) and conditioned, my body was vigorously washed and shaved and then if I was feeling pretty confident about the date I was going on, I’d exfoliate my entire body with a coconut oil sugar scrub, and then use an apricot exfoliating scrub on my face. After getting out of the shower, I’d moisturize my entire body with a delicious smelling citrus body oil, which brings us to the point of this post.

DIY Citrus Body Oil

Initially, I bought the body oil because it claimed to combat cellulite, but I never really saw a difference. I did, however, like the scent and the combination of oils in the body oil, so I decided to try and make my own version. Given the ingredients were all listed on the bottle and were easy to get (if I didn’t have them already) it was super easy, and less expensive, to make myself some body oil so that I could keep my Saturday pampering going.

The body oil is a beautiful golden yellow colour and smells lightly of citrus which is aptly appropriate in the summer and winter. I love using it in the summer when my legs and arms are bare because it leaves a slight sheen on them, which I think helps to give them a healthy glow. Pair that with a tan and you’re golden. The one thing that I would caution is that you use it sparingly if you’re wearing white or light coloured fabrics. The last thing you want is to use too much to moisturize your legs and then have it sink into a beautiful white sundress!

The main oil is coconut oil, followed by jojoba oil (can anyone explain to me how to pronounce that? lol) and olive oil. It’s finished with lemon, orange and grapefruit essential oils for a lovely scent.

I guess, to be fair, I could keep that routine the same in the unprecedented times that we now live in, but let’s be honest, I’m not taking an hour-long shower and looking my best, smoothest, most pampered self just to stay in my apartment and work on projects. The body oil stays, but I don’t bother with 90% of the other things.

However, given that we’re now going back into winter and apartments tend to be dryer than the Sahara, this body oil is still a great idea to keep your skin hydrated! So whatever the reason for wanting more hydrated skin, this citrus body oil is a great option! Bonus points if you can reuse an old bottle to make this in!

Here’s how to make your own Citrus Body Oil:

Combine the coconut oil, olive oil and jojoba oil in a saucepan over low heat to gently melt the coconut oil.

Once the coconut oil is melted, take the mixture off the heat

Add the essential oils and give the mixture a stir to ensure that everything is well combined.

Allow the mixture to cool for about 30 minutes and then pour into a bottle. I reused the bottle that the original oil came in so it came with a pump which worked out perfectly.

      Hi Chrissy,

Great question. If you can fully and completely blend the oils without, there is no need to use heat. The heat is just a way to wholly blend the oils together.

Could you use something else instead of jojoba oil? I don’t have any in my house right now and really want to make this recipe.

Absolutely – depending on your skin type, there are lots of oils you could choose. Almond, avocado, and apricot kernel are all great options. They all
have health benefits and vitamins that are specific to them.
