Hello again from ice cream land! Here is Pop Shop America’s second installment in the FROYO cocktail series! If you missed our delectable Pink Squirrel Cocktail, please check it out!
While there are many variations on the Grasshopper Cocktail, ours is special because it uses homemade FROYO (another yummy recipe you can get from our blog!). This lightens the calorie count without taking away any of the indulgence of the original version that uses ice cream. One of my favorite things about a Grasshopper is that its chilly minty flavor makes it the perfect after dinner treat.
The original Grasshopper cocktail is said to have been created in 1918 in the French Quarter of New Orleans by Tujague’s then proprietor Philip Guichet. Tujague’s Restaruant is still open today and claims the honor of both being the city’s second oldest restaurant (having opened in the mid 1800’s) and also having created the Grasshopper cocktail. Quite impressive!
Now to get down to the business of getting that cocktail in-hand so you can put up your feet and enjoy!
If you’ve got a batch of frozen yogurt made up, pull it out to soften just a little bit for easier mixing.
Next, lay out your spirits and garnishes and a suitable glass (preferably a glass that makes you feel like a Jazz-Age sweetheart!).
The creme de menthe gives the Grasshopper its lovely green color and I like to make it even more colorful with rainbow jimmies. However, Grasshoppers are also great with the more traditional garnishes of chocolate or a fresh sprig of mint.
The first step is to mix your spirits with the slightly softened frozen yogurt. You can either do this by mixing vigorously in a glass or by using a blender. Be careful not to overblend if you want the drink to retain a milkshake-like consistency.
Pour the mixture into your glass of choice and garnish with whatever your heart desires!
Some other garnish ideas include – chocolate sandwich cookies, dark chocolate shavings, a fresh sprig of mint or go wild and stick a chocolate dipped grasshopper on the rim! Eeeeks!!!
Skinny Grasshopper Frozen Yogurt Cocktail
- 2 cups Frozen Greek Yogurt
- 1/2 oz. Creme de Menthe
- 1/2 oz. White Creme de Cacao
- 1 oz. vodka
- Whipped Cream & Rainbow Jimmies for garnish!
- Blend the yogurt with 1⁄2 oz. crème de menthe and crème de cacao, and 1 oz. vodka.
- Pour into a highball glass.
- Garnish with a dollop of whipped cream and rainbow jimmies (a.k.a. sprinkles!). Enjoy immediately!
